Australian Businessman Owns Soccer Team, Hates Soccer

Mining magnate Clive Palmer is a billionaire, the fifth richest person in Australia, and the wealthiest man in the state of Queensland. He’s also the owner of the competitive, if poorly attended Gold Coast United (Think Australia’s FC Dallas). The only real problem is that he hates soccer.

Speaking in Brisbane’s Sunday Mail, Palmer revealed

I don’t even like the game. I think it’s a hopeless game. Rugby league’s a much better game.

This prompted the Australian Federation to release a statement, telling Palmer his comments were unacceptable, and reminding him of his obligation as an owner.

It’s a good thing there aren’t any American owners in MLS who got into the sport without a real love of the game and no discernible direction for their ownership. That would just be awful and embarrassing for that team and the league as a whole.
