Spurs took on Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday and Benoit Assou-Ekotto, the Tottenham defender, attempted to make a fashion statement with his boots. If you look closely at the photo, it’s pretty clear that he’s wearing two different colors of the adidas adiPower Predator with the Champions League White/Purple colorway on his right foot and the launch Blue/Electricity on his left.

Now, you may be saying to yourself: “Wow! What a maverick! I want to be just like him!” Before you use that inspiration and walk out the door with a Nike on your left and a dress shoe on your right, just wait a second. Benoit Assou-Ekotto was far from the first to do this with Major League Soccer’s own Fredy Montero doing it more than a year ago. That’s right, the man from the team that invented everything that you hold near and dear also popularized mismatching footwear.
