Budweiser, the official sponsor of the FA Cup, is trying to jazz up the competition with a good old-fashioned PR stunt and some outside-the-box thinking. And by “outside-the-box thinking,” we mean “ripping off a twenty-year-old Simpsons bit.”
Wembley FC plays in the Combined Counties League Premier Division, some eight steps below the Premiership. It made its only appearance in the FA Cup proper in 1980-81. But with the help of sponsor Budweiser, it aims to change that by bringing in a load of retired internationals.
Former England manager Terry Venables has been appointed Technical Director, and he’s helped convince David Seaman, Graeme Le Saux, Martin Keown, Ray Parlour, Claudio Caniggia, Jose Canseco, and Brian McBride to run out for the Lions in the FA Cup.
They should be a good team, really, as long as they don’t have to do much running. At the very best, this could lead to some fantastic new #McBrideFacts.
