When Minnesota Timberwolves rookie Ricky Rubio went down with a knee injury last weekend, people were bummed. The young Spaniard was lighting up the league with his burgeoning talents, and everyone was sad to see him sidelined. That “everyone” included Denver Nuggets head coach George Karl, who showed his support for Rubio by wearing a Barcelona shirt his pregame media session.

Karl’s son Coby played with Rubio in Spain, before the Spanish phenom moved on to Barcelona’s basketball department in 2009.

George himself it probably no stranger to Spanish futbol; the veteran NBA coach spent two years in Spain coaching Real Madrid’s basketball team in the late 80s/early 90s. Here’s Karl exhorting his team.

It seems safe to say that Karl’s time in Madrid did not imbue him with any particular passion for Los Merengues, or he wouldn’t be sporting that Barca shirt. Just sayin’. Or…he just supports them both (is that allowed?).
