According to the site AllFacebook.com, which calls itself ‘the unofficial Facebook resource”, sports-related status updates on Facebook are dominated by soccer. It doesn’t matter that nearly a quarter of all Facebook users are in the U.S., which, if you didn’t know, isn’t quite in love with the beautiful game as is the rest of the world. Soccer/football/futbol rules the social network.

The list of sports teams most mentioned in 2011 reads like a list of the world’s biggest football clubs, with the Los Angeles Lakers thrown in. In fact, the Lakes are the only non-soccer team on the list.

Top 10 Sports Teams

1. FC Barcelona
2. Real Madrid C.F.
3. Manchester United
4. Los Angeles Lakers
5. Chelsea Football Club
6. Liverpool FC
7. A.C. Milan
8. Arsenal
9. Galatasaray
10. Fenerbahçe

Something else unsurprising revealed by the list: Turkish fans are super passionate about their teams.

The list of top athletes mentioned in status updates is a bit more varied, though still dominated by soccer. Ronaldo comes in behind Messi in this list, just like he seems to in everything else. Barcelona also comes in ahead of Real Madrid, three names to two.
