Ipswich Town striker Michael Chopra has been formally charged with race fixing by the British Horseracing Authority. Chopra is one of three footballer charged by the BHA as part of an investigation into suspicious races in Britain between November 2010 and March 2011. Nottingham Forest midfielder James Coppinger and former Manchester United player Mark Wilson were the other players charged.

Chopra has a history of gambling problems and once claimed to have lost £1 million, betting up to £20,000 a day. When you’re throwing down that type of cash and you know people, race-fixing has to be a constant temptation.

Chopra has done multiple stints in rehab facilities for his addiction; Ipswich even stepped up with £250,000 to pay of Chopra’s debts in December of last year.

Despite the charges, Chopra looks all set to play against his old club Cardiff City on the weekend.
