TIME magazine released their ninth annual TIME 100, a list of the 100 most influential people in the world, and there’s just one name from the world of football on it. Lionel Andres Messi. The Barcelona star joins a handful of sports figures on the list (Jeremy Lin, Tim Tebow, and Novak Djokovic are among the others), which identifies those people who have the power of influence to change the world in an age where influence is expressly ephemeral. TIME found guest contributors to write about each nominee, and selected American soccer great Mia Hamm to expound on Messi’s genius.

Mia on Messi:

He makes you hold your breath every time he touches the ball. It never seems to leave his feet. His love of the game and the pride he feels while playing for Barcelona and Argentina are palpable.

He certainly has the potential to be remembered as the best player of all time, and I am so grateful for his approach to the game in this day and age. Clearly he plays because he loves it, and it shows every time he takes the field.

Go here for the rest of Mia’s thoughts on the world’s best player and be sure to check out the full TIME 100.
