Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua, famous as “that club that gave Nicolas Anelka all that money” have decided to get the most out of their investment by elevating their superstar striker to a player-coach position under manager Jean Tigana. And not, as he seems to believe, manager.
Off to a poor start, with just 5 points from their first 5 games (Anelka has two goals), Shenhua shuffled the deck, keeping France legend Jean Tigana on as manager but jettisoning his assistants. The club then brought in several Europeans to work as coaches and, seeing as he was already on the payroll, made Anelka a player coach. Except he seems to think its a slightly more prestigious promotion:
it’s official I just become the new player-manager of Shanghai Shenhua.

While this may just be something lost in translation from Chinese to French to English, we’d like to imagine Nicolas showing up in a suit and giving a team-talk without realizing he didn’t get the top job.
