A mild sponsor-related controversy erupted in Munich this week when new Bayern signing Mario Goetze wore a Nike t-shirt to his unveiling for the German giants. The problem? Bayern Munich is an adidas club. The club was forced to apologize to their kit provider, going so far as to state that such a thing would never happen again. It seemed like a one-off situation, a young Nike-sponsored player undermining his new club. Then Isco, a new signing for Real Madrid (also an adidas club) from Malaga, did the same thing at his medical. We see you, Nike.
Isco later changed into a button-up and a blazer for the jersey-presentation photo-op, but it seems pretty clear that the Nike shirt was no accident.
Here’s the more brazen Mario Goetze at the “controversial” Bayern Munich unveiling.
