Yesterday, we covered the revolutionary miCoach technology that adidas debuted at the MLS All-Star Game last week. Not to be outdone by its biggest rival, Nike has obtained a patent for its own performance-tracking technology. That will involved sensors embedded in your balls. Your soccer balls.

According to BusinessWeek:

The world’s largest sporting-goods maker this week obtained a patent for an invention dubbed Nike+TM that uses a computerized radar system with transmitters placed on a ball and players to evaluate individual statistics such as the strength of a shot in soccer and how well a team plays together.

It’s a shame that this news comes only a day after Roberto Carlos announced he had hung up his boots for good. Pour one out for the awesome stats-assisted commentary we’re never going to get now.
