Meet Guagie, the gray gorilla unveiled as the mascot for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, set to take place in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon next year. Generally, tournament mascots are cute and cuddly. Guagie is more like fearsome. Even if he’s smiling.

Guagie is a nod to conservation in the equatorial forests of the region, so it’s not as weird as you might think.

The question, though, is if the guy in the gorilla suit is more unsettling than the smiling antelope, Palanquinha, that was the mascot of the last Africa Cup of Nations.

Guagie wins, especially since I can’t find an image of someone dressed in a Palanquina suit.

UPDATE: Thanks (or not?) to KCKRS reader Henning14 for pointing out that Guagie seems to be sporting something extra in his shorts. Try to get that image out of your head today.

UPDATE AGAIN: Apparently someone didn’t like us embedding the video of Guagie dancing around the stage with this happiness showing through his shorts. Go to YouTube to see it.
