It was only a matter of time before D.C. United’s big money Indonesian ownership had an impact on the soccer side of the club. Likely thanks to new investor Erick Thohir, D.C. United had a guest addition to their reserve league match with the Montreal Impact today: Andik Vermansyah, dubbed the “Indonesian Messi” by a really hopeful person in Indonesia who probably doesn’t really understand just how good Messi is, or just think Andik sorta looks like Messi.

The club says Andik is just on a two-week training stint, so this isn’t necessarily a “trial.” Still, it wouldn’t be smart to bet against there being an Indonesian player signed to D.C. United in the very near future. And if you’re going to sign an Indonesian player, it’s probably smart to sign the one someone decided was the closest thing Indonesia has to Messi.
