Third Choice Keeper Mike Magee Posts Shutout For LA Galaxy, Is Not Actually A Keeper

After starter Donovan Ricketts was forced out of the Galaxy’s match with an injury, Bruce Arena would have been concerned and annoyed, but not unduly worried. Josh Saunders is a capable and experienced backup who had already started seven games this season.

But he was definitely pulling his hair out in clumps once Saunders delivered the most deserved elbow in the history of soccer (Check out 3:20 in the video) into the face of Steven Lenhart before the first half was over.

Like any team, the Galaxy only carries one backup keeper on the bench, so midfielder Mike Magee deputized, and surprisingly, did pretty dang well. The LA defense was at sixes and sevens for most of the game, but Magee managed to hold out for the shutout and the draw, and even made a couple of saves (Ed: Magee won MLS Player of the Week for his impromptu keeper performance).

And if there’s any justice at all, MLS will slap Lenhart with a fine and make him get a haircut.
