In addition to being an obsessive football fan, I’m something of a music geek as well. The name “Peter Saville” brings to mind the iconic record covers he did for some of Britain’s great independent rock bands. Not just the legendary Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division (his best known design, and one of my favorite t-shirts), but also the work he did with New Order, Suede, and Pulp, among others. So I was thrilled when he was brought in by Umbro to design the new England kit.

This set, a limited edition alternative to the main England kit, incorporates Saville’s “Modern England” design of interlocking crosses of Saint George, the main feature of the English flag.

When England line up against Montenegro today, a game that could see them qualify for the European Championships, they will be wearing the new anthem jacket for the first time.
